Italy is the first major country by population to have ratified the Council of Europe Framework Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society. Two years after this event of European significance, this volume comments on the Convention's groundbreaking scope, as well as the strategies developed for its implementation, taking stock of the Italian context.
Experiences of actors engaged in the field and academic research also highlight the varied landscape in which "heritage communities," as defined by the legal text itself, find themselves developing their own action to regenerate and transmit a heritage that is often put at risk by economic, social and demographic policies within Europe.
The collected contributions describe how cultural associations and citizens' groups intervene in decisions about cultural heritage, tangible as well as intangible, and in its care, management and enhancement, alongside public institutions, in participatory processes from below.
Comprising the volume are testimonies from institutional representatives, national and from other European countries, from academia and research, as well as from civil society associations engaged in the work of protecting and enhancing Europe's rich heritage in its material as well as intangible meanings.
