Great banner and blue illumination

#FestaEuVenezia2020

On the occasion of the Europe Day Celebrations from May 5 and throughout the all month, in St Mark’s Square, from the windows of the Venice office of the Council of Europe a banner with the starry blue flag of Europe flied.
The Council of Europe, which has been defending human rights and democracy on our continent for over 70 years, was signed in London on 5 May. The Venice office, the only Italian office of the organization, collaborates with Europe Direct of the City of Venice to the organization of the many events that this year will celebrate Europe Day.

In the evenings of 5 and 9 May the facades of the Municipalities of Venice and Mestre, the Civic Tower of Mestre, and the fountain of Piazzale Giovannacci in Marghera are illuminated in blue.

In this way, the City Council intends to celebrate Europe Day again this year, which will be celebrated on 9 May, in memory of the speech given in 1950 by the then French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman, in which he had set out the idea of a new form of political cooperation for Europe, which would have made a war between the continental nations unthinkable.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the "Schuman Declaration" (1950-2020).

The blue illumination also recalls 5 May 1949, the foundation of the Council of Europe (through the Treaty of London), which has its only Italian headquarters in Venice and which for over 70 years has defended human rights and democracy in our continent.
