By Decree-Law No. 132/2014, converted with amendments into Law No. 162/2014, alternative dispute resolution instruments were introduced for the settlement of disagreements before the commencement of the trial or while the trial is pending.

In particular, the regulation applies to:

the new institution of negotiation assisted by at least one lawyer per party, for the conclusion of agreements on legal separation, termination of civil effects or dissolution of marriage.

• consensual separation, joint request for dissolution or cessation of the civil effects of the marriage or modification of the conditions of separation or divorce, to be made before the Civil Registrar.

• foreign divorce
