The European Day of Languages (#EDL) was born on the initiative of the Council of Europe, which in 2001, together with the European Commission organized for the first time the European Year of Languages. The celebrations of that year represented a success as they involved millions of people from 45 participating states. Its activities celebrated linguistic diversity in Europe and promoted language learning.

Following the success of the Year, the Council of Europe declared that the European Day of Languages would be celebrated on September 26 every year.

Since 2015, Europe Direct of the City of Venice has been celebrating the European Day of Languages with a series of initiatives in collaboration with the Venice Office of the Council of Europe, the Department of Comparative Linguistic and Cultural Studies of the Ca' Foscari University of Venice and the USR Veneto Regional School Office.

Since 2021 Europe Direct of the City of Venice has been the national referent for the European Centre for Modern Languages of the Council of Europe in Graz, responsible for the official website translated into 37 different languages.
