European Day of Languages - Languages for History: Travellers and Travelling Women

​​On Thursday 26 September 2024, the European Day of Languages was celebrated throughout Europe. Venice and Treviso took part in the official celebrations with the event "European Day of Languages - Languages for History: Travelling Men and Women".

The Ca' Foscari University of Venice with the Department of Comparative Linguistic and Cultural Studies and the CLA Centro Linguistico di Ateneo, the USR Veneto Regional School Office, the Italian office of the Council of Europe, the Mazzotti Foundation, the Marciana National Library, the Marco Polo Committee for the 700th anniversary of the death of the famous Venetian traveller and Europe Direct of the Venice City Council - the European Union's information network which in Veneto has the Venice City Council as its leader - organised the European Day of Languages 2024.

Since 2021 Europe Direct of the Municipality of Venice has been the national contact point for the European Centre for Modern Languages of the Council of Europe in Graz, responsible for the official website translated into 37 different languages.

As in previous editions and since 2001, the initiative invites people to reflect on the importance of language learning for the integral growth of the individual and on the importance of linguistic and cultural diversity as an intangible heritage to be cherished, respected and protected. 

2024 is the European Year of Skills! The European Commission has designated 2024 as the European Year of Skills in order to give more importance and space to the priorities of young people in policy areas relevant to the European Union and the European Day of Languages 2024 is part of the activities dedicated to young Europeans. 

The 24th edition of the European Day of Languages was held in Veneto on 26 and 30 September 2024 in Venice and Treviso with two days of events open to the public (free admission subject to availability). 
This year's theme: "Languages for History: Travelling Men and Women" celebrated linguistic and cultural plurality in Europe. The European Day of Languages saw students from schools in the Veneto Region and Ca' Foscari University involved in various educational activities for the acquisition of several languages and cultural awareness.
 
This year, the event was held in collaboration with the University Language Centre (CLA) of Ca' Foscari University in Venice. On Thursday 26 September 2024, it organized in the garden of Palazzina Briati an afternoon of workshops for adults, families and children on the Mongolian language and culture entitled "In the Footsteps of Marco Polo: Let's get to know Mongolian language and culture" to commemorate 700th anniversary of the death of the famous Venetian traveler Marco Polo.
  
In the evening of Thursday 26 September, Biennale Musica kicked off with the inaugural concert “Polyphonies.” at the Teatro la Fenice. More information here: https://www.labiennale.org/en/music/2024.

The European Day of Languages is an event held across Europe every year on September 26 with the aim of raising awareness of the wide variety of languages in Europe promote cultural and linguistic diversity encourage people of all ages to learn languages, because speaking more than one makes it easier to get in touch with people and helps people find jobs and grow businesses.

The European Day of Languages was established by the European Commission and the Council of Europe, representing 800 million Europeans from 47 different countries. Many cultural and language institutes, associations, universities and, in particular, schools participate. Established in 2001, on the occasion of the European Year of Languages, this day has been celebrated every year since then.

On 26 September and the days before and afterwards, language courses, games, talks, radio programmes and many other initiatives were organised throughout Europe.

To commemorate the European Day of Languages,  the Executive Director of the European Centre for Modern Languages of the Council of Europe, Sarah Breslin, made  a short video which is available in English and French.

Moreover, the President of the Republic of Lithuania, Gitanas Nausėda,  issued a statement for the European Day of Languages. Lithuania currently holds the presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe for the term May-November 2024.
