Certificates, extracts, copies

Pursuant to Art. 74(2)(a) of Presidential Decree No. 445/2000, in dealings with government bodies, public service providers and private individuals, certificates are always replaced by declarations in lieu of certification or affidavits, for which see the forms below:

The certificates that can be issued are:

certificate/extract/copy of full birth certificate
certificate/extract/copy of full marriage certificate/publications of marriage/civil union
certificate/extract/copy of full death certificate

For whom is the service intended?

to anyone who requests it, subject to legal restrictions

What to do

Make an application to the Civil Registry Office by filling in the following forms:

Full copies or abstracts of certificates may be requested subject to the identification of the applicant and, if necessary, with power of attorney:

by accessing the DIME platform
via the sportelli polifunzionali (multifunctional helpdesks): Sportello Polifunzionale - URP Venezia and Sportello Polifunzionale - URP Mestre by calling the Contact Centre 041041
through all registry front offices

All certifications are sent to the applicant in digital format by e-mail.

Please note:

- extracts of birth certificates complete with personal particulars are issued exclusively to the persons concerned, but may also be collected by third parties provided that they have a proxy from the person concerned and a copy of their own identity document;

- full copies of the documents, upon written request and subject to the limitations provided for by law, may only be issued to the persons concerned or to those who have a legally relevant interest. Requests must be made for appropriate reasons and interest must be concrete and current, corresponding to a legally protected situation connected with the document to which access is requested.

A hard copy of the document will only be sent to the applicant in the event they agree to cover all postage costs. Such deliveries will be organised as follows:

- deliveries in Italy: transmission to the Civil Registry Archives of a self-addressed stamped envelope or collection by express courier service;

- deliveries abroad: collection of the document at the Civil Registry Archives by express courier service;

Digitised birth, marriage, civil partnership or death certificates and abstracts can be requested independently by citizens in possession of a digital identity (SPID - Sistema Pubblico di identità Digitale), electronic identity card or national services card by accessing the DIME platform:

birth certificates from 1 January 1964

abstracts of birth certificates from 1 January 1964

marriage certificates from 1 January 1978

abstracts of marriage certificates from 1 January 1978

death certificates from 21 November 1996

abstracts of death certificates from 21 November 1996

abstracts of civil unions

How much does it cost?
All certificates/abstracts/full copies of vital records are free of charge.

Quality standards

Time interval between registration of request and issuing of the certificate/abstract or copy: <= 30 days

(immediate if online).
