To mark November, 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, established by the UN in 1999, the artistic performance ‘A Human Wave Against Gender Violence’, created by the artist Elena Tagliapietra, was held in Campo Santa Maria Formosa in Venice to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the women's shelter of the Municipality of Venice.

The aim of the event was to create awareness on what has been done, is being done and still can be done to combat violence against women. Furthermore, the collective performance aimed to involve the citizenship in the creation of a living work of art and to send a powerful message of resistance and solidarity.

The event was free and open to all citizens after registration at the following link. Interested citizens were required to come dressed in bright blue clothing.

The arrival time was scheduled for 11.00 a.m., while the performance took place from 12.00 p.m. to 1.00 p.m. It consisted of the formation of a human river that simulated waves of resistance against violence. Photos and videos were taken, both by drones and from fixed locations. Pictures of the performance will be exhibited at a city museum in March, during the ‘Marzo Donna’ event.

Besides, writer Alberto Toso Fei provided a historical account on Venetian women who paved the way for women's emancipation as early as the 16th century, showing that women are masters of their own destiny, proving that the right to study is a weapon of emancipation and defence, and the right to work a form of autonomy and indipendence.
